Only the blue chimney, stretching towards the clouds, gives any hint of the recent past of this former boiler house.
Built in 1952 by architect André Lurçat, this heating factory provided heat to the city of Saint-Denis for many years.
In 1993, invited by Saint-Denis mayor, Patrick Braouezec, Philippe Decouflé and the Compagnie DCA took over the derelict venue. After some major renovation, the giant concrete cube was transformed into a theatre box.
The building, with a total surface area of 700 m2, is hinged around a scenic space of 200m2, equipped with lighting grip and catwalks. An 80 m2 dance studio completes the setup. With changing rooms and washrooms, a workshop/warehouse for sets and props, as well as offices, La Chaufferie (“The Boiler House”) has, over the years and stages of renovation, become a work space exceptionally well-adapted for the activity of a dance company.
Over time, La Chaufferie has transformed into a place of work, research, and rehearsal for the Compagnie DCA.
Guest studios are also made available for young companies who come for technical trials and for rehearsals, which are often open to the public or other professionals. The Compagnie DCA also emphasises its collaborations with local cultural bodies, such as the Festival de Saint-Denis and the Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales de Seine Saint-Denis.
